About our South Gate concrete contractor business

How a few weekend jobs turned into a concrete company

I started out pouring walks and patching driveways for neighbors in South Gate on weekends, and those side jobs slowly turned into Advanced South Gate Concrete, in business since 2013. I learned the trade working next to older finishers and fixing a lot of other people's mistakes. The fixing taught me more. Most of the bad slabs I've broken up looked fine on top. The trouble was underneath, in a base that was raked flat instead of dug out and packed, or a slope that sent the water back toward the house.

So that's where I put my attention. The base, the slope and the joints get buried the day we pour, and you won't see them again until something goes wrong. Most of our calls come from homeowners and small property owners in South Gate and the cities around it. Most of that work is flatwork, the driveways, patios and walks that lie flat on the ground, and we're best known for flatwork that drains right and holds up.

What you can expect when you hire us

  • You deal with the owner from start to finish

I come out to look at your job and write the estimate myself, and I'm usually on site while our own crew preps, forms, pours and finishes. The person who quoted your job is the one checking it at the final walkthrough.

  • Most of our effort goes into what you can't see

A slab is only as good as the subgrade, the packed soil and base it sits on, so we dig it out and compact it instead of raking it level. We also check where your water runs, so the slope carries it away from the house.

  • We tell you where it's likely to crack

Concrete cracks a little somewhere, and I'd rather say so before you sign than pretend it won't. We cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a place to crack, while the concrete is fresh, so any crack tends to follow a line we picked.

  • We take care of the permit side

When your job calls for a permit, we pull it with the city or county office for your address and work through the inspections with them. You don't have to sort out that part on your own.

Licenses and insurance

  • California contractor license

The state licensing board requires a contractor's license for any job that needs a building permit, uses extra workers, or totals $1,000 or more in labor and materials, and most concrete jobs clear that line easily. We're fully licensed and insured.

  • South Gate business license

The City of South Gate requires a business license of every business working inside city limits, including contractors with offices in other cities. The city's Building and Safety Division issues building permits to the property owner or to a state-licensed contractor who holds that city business license, so it's a fair question to ask anyone you're thinking of hiring.
