Stamped concrete services in South Gate CA - a pattern that hides its joints

Plain gray slab cracked, sunk or just tired? We pour a colored, stamped slab with the joints laid into the pattern.

What is stamped concrete and how is it different from a plain slab?

Stamped concrete is a regular poured slab that we color, press with rubber stamp mats while it's still soft, then seal, so a patio, walk or driveway in South Gate looks like stone, brick, wood plank or tile but is built the same as any plain slab underneath.

Most calls start with a cracked patio, a walk that's sunk or a gray slab that just looks tired, and the first question is whether it can be dressed up or has to come out, which I'll answer once I've seen it. The price moves with the size of the area, how much old concrete needs concrete cutting and hauling, how much base work the ground needs and how detailed the pattern and colors get. The schedule turns on tear-out, a permit when the job needs one, which we pull, and curing, the days the slab needs to harden before it takes your weight. Your written estimate spells out your own number.

What our stamped concrete work involves

Stamped concrete moves like any slab, so most of my attention goes under it. We dig out and pack the subgrade, the dirt and base the slab sits on, because a base that's only raked level settles and takes the pattern down with it, and we set the slope so water runs away from your house instead of toward it. Before the pour I lay out the control joints, the cut grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack, together with the pattern, so they fall along grout lines or plank edges on the same spacing a plain slab needs. Then our crew sets the forms and the rebar, the steel that holds a crack tight if one opens, pours when the top won't bake before it's finished, colors it, stamps it while it's soft, cuts the joints on time and seals it. If the budget gets tight, I'll trim the pattern before I trim the base, because you can reseal a top but you can't fix a base without tearing the slab out. At the end we talk about resealing so you know the upkeep.

A stamped patio usually connects to something. If the walk out front or along the side yard is cracked, we can pour it as part of our concrete sidewalk building work, plain or stamped to match. If the driveway runs into a garage with a pitted floor, garage floor concrete can go on the same estimate so the two meet clean at the door.

Stamped patios, walks and driveways in South Gate

In South Gate, the city's Building and Safety Division handles permits, and you can reach it at (323) 563-9549 with permit or inspection questions. The city's list puts patios in the permit column and lists sidewalks and driveways within private property as exempt, along with platforms, walks and driveways no more than 30 inches above grade and not over a basement or story below. Any work in the public right-of-way, out toward the street, needs a separate encroachment permit from the city, and a project that disturbs more than 5,000 square feet of soil typically goes through the city's small-site plan review. When a job calls for a permit, we pull it with the city or county office for your address and work through the inspections, and if your job sits close to the line on those lists, I check with the division before we dig.

A lot of what we break out around here is an older backyard slab poured over raked dirt that has sunk toward the back door, so water pools against the wall every time it rains. We fix the base and the slope before anyone picks a pattern, and we see the same tired slabs on jobs in Lynwood and Huntington Park.

How a stamped job works

  1. Call or send the form

Tell us what you've got, whether that's a cracked patio, a walk you want to match or a bare patch of yard. We get back to you and set a time for me to come look.

  2. I look and write it up

I come out myself and check the ground, where the water runs and what's going to sit on the slab, from a patio table to a truck. You get a written estimate with your price, the pattern and colors, where the joints will sit and whether the old concrete has to come out.

  3. Permit, prep and the pour

If the job needs a permit, we take care of it first, then our crew preps, forms, pours, stamps and finishes. The joints get cut where we marked them on the layout, not wherever is handy that afternoon.

  4. Walk the finished job together

I walk the job with you at the end so you can see the joint lines, the drainage and the seal. That's also when we go over when to stay off it and what the resealing looks like.

Questions before you book stamped concrete

How much does stamped concrete cost in the Los Angeles area?

Stamped concrete in the Los Angeles area usually costs about $15 to $30 per square foot, which is a general market figure for the installed slab and not our price. Where your job lands depends on tear-out, base work and how detailed the pattern and colors get. Your written estimate gives you your own number.

Will new stamped concrete crack like my old slab?

It can, because stamped concrete cracks for the same reasons any slab does, including tree roots or anything else that shifts the base underneath. That's why we put the work into the base and plan the joints into the pattern, since a cracked stamped slab is hard and costly to repair without the patch showing.

How often does stamped concrete need resealing?

Reseal when the surface tells you to, not on a set number of years, which is how the trade guidance puts it. A dull color or water that stops beading up is usually the sign, and I'll show you what to watch for when we walk the finished job.

How do I know if my old concrete can be resurfaced instead of replaced?

Resurfacing works when the old concrete is in reasonably good shape, while large cracks, heavy spalling, which is the top chipping and flaking off, or bad settling usually mean it has to be replaced. The slab has to be checked as structurally sound first, so I look at that on the estimate visit and tell you which way your job goes, since replacement makes it a bigger job.

How long before I can walk or drive on new stamped concrete?

Poured concrete typically needs at least 24 hours of curing before you walk on it and seven days before you drive on it. Plan your parking and the path to your door around that week, and keep furniture and pets off until we tell you it's ready.

Does a concrete contractor need a license in California?

Yes, the Contractors State License Board requires a license when the project needs a building permit, uses additional workers or totals $1,000 or more in labor and materials. Most stamped patios and driveways clear that last line easily, so make sure whoever you hire holds one before work starts.

Why South Gate homeowners call Advanced South Gate Concrete for stamped concrete

  • The owner writes your estimate

I come out to look at the job and write the estimate myself, and our own crew does the prep, forming, pouring and finishing, usually with me on site. The person who laid out your joints is standing there when they get cut.

  • Started on South Gate walks

I started pouring walks and patching driveways for neighbors in South Gate on weekends, and we've been in business since 2013. Much of what I know came from older finishers and from fixing other people's mistakes, so I know what a lazy base looks like a few years later.

  • Licensed, insured, honest about cracks

We're fully licensed and insured. Your satisfaction, guaranteed, and part of that is telling you up front that a slab will crack a little somewhere instead of pretending it won't.

On a stamped job, the base and the joints matter more than the color, so ask about those first. Tell us about your project or call (213) 643-0035, and I'll come take a look.

  • Concrete sidewalk building

Your walk is often the first concrete anyone steps on, and a cracked or sunken one beside a new stamped patio makes both of them look worse.

  • Garage floor concrete

A garage floor takes car weight, oil drips and wet tires every day, so getting its base and slope right matters as much as any finish outside.
