Concrete driveway building in South Gate CA - a slab that drains and holds up

Cracked, sinking or puddling driveway? We build a new one on a packed base, sloped so rain runs to the street, not your garage.

What goes into a new concrete driveway in South Gate?

Concrete driveway building in South Gate means digging out, building a firm base and pouring a new slab you can drive and park on, sloped so rain runs to the street instead of toward your house. Done right, you get a driveway that sheds water and carries whatever you park on it.

Most people call us because the old driveway has cracked, sunk at one corner or started holding water by the garage, and what's under it is usually the reason. The price moves with the size, the thickness, how much base work your ground needs and the finish you pick, and the schedule turns on any permit and the wait before you can drive on the new slab. If the budget's tight, cut the fancy finish and keep the base, because nobody sees the base on day one and everybody sees it when the slab settles a few years later. The estimate I write on site puts a number on your driveway and shows what it covers.

How we build a concrete driveway

It starts with two questions, what parks on it and where the rain goes, because those set the thickness and the slope. Our crew digs down to the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, and packs a firm base so the concrete isn't resting on loose dirt. We set the forms so the slab falls toward the street and away from the garage, add rebar, the steel that holds the slab together, where the load calls for it, and pour in the cooler part of the day, since concrete that bakes at noon tends to end up with a weak, dusty top. Then we give it a broom finish, a light texture so tires and shoes grip when it's wet, and cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a straight place to crack, before it picks its own spot. Curing comes last, and it's mostly waiting while the concrete gains strength.

A driveway is often only part of the plan. If you want somewhere to sit out back, we can handle the concrete patio construction in the same project, with the same attention to slope. If you'd rather the driveway look like stone or brick, stamped concrete is an option, just know it's a finish on top of the same base and not a substitute for it.

Driveway permits and site work in South Gate

South Gate's Building and Safety Division is the office for permits, and the city says one is typically required for home improvement, repair and construction work. If any of the work reaches into the public right-of-way, often the stretch where the driveway meets the street, the city also requires a separate encroachment permit. When your job calls for a permit, we pull it with the city and work through the inspections with them, so you're not the one standing at the counter.

A lot of the driveways we see here and on jobs in Lynwood and Downey run along the side of the house to a garage at the back, and when one was poured flat or tipped the wrong way, the water ends up at the garage door. We settle the slope before anything else, because nobody can fix it once the concrete's hard.

How driveway building works

  1. Call us or send the form

Call (213) 643-0035 or use the form and tell us roughly how big the driveway is and what you park on it. We'll get back to you and set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look and write it up

I come out myself and look at the ground, where the water runs now and what's going to sit on the slab. You get a written estimate with the thickness, the slope and the base work spelled out, so you can see what the price pays for.

  3. We handle permits and prep

If your driveway needs a permit, we take care of it before we start. Then our crew digs out, packs the base and sets the forms, and I'm usually there with them.

  4. We pour, finish, then walk it

We pour, finish and cut the joints, then the slab cures before it takes a car. I walk the finished driveway with you at the end so you can ask anything while we're both looking at it.

Questions before you build a concrete driveway

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

A concrete trade group's driveway guide says 4 inches is generally enough for a home driveway, unless heavy trucks park on it regularly. A state concrete association puts going from 4 to 5 inches at about 20% more concrete cost for nearly 50% more load-carrying capacity, so if a heavy truck lives in your driveway, tell me when I come out.

How much does a new concrete driveway cost in South Gate?

A plain concrete driveway in Los Angeles usually costs about $7 to $18 per square foot installed. That's the going rate around here, not our price, and where yours lands depends on the size, the thickness, the base work and the finish. My estimate gives you the number for your driveway.

How long after pouring can I drive on a new concrete driveway?

Wait at least 7 days before you drive on it, which is what a concrete trade group's guide recommends. The slab is still curing and gaining strength that first week, so plan to park on the street or somewhere else until then.

Will my new concrete driveway crack?

It may crack a little somewhere, and I'd rather tell you that now than act surprised later. Fibers mixed into the concrete can help control early shrinkage cracks and improve durability, and steel may still be needed if the driveway sees heavy traffic. Between that and the control joints, the goal is cracks you barely notice, in places we picked.

What is the best way to keep a concrete driveway from sinking?

Build it on firm ground, which means removing soft spots before the pour and replacing them with good material like gravel or crushed rock. A national industry guide notes that many western states have expansive soil, the kind that swells and shrinks with water, and calls for a layer of crushed rock under the slab with the depth set by how expansive the soil is. I look at your ground during the estimate, and that's where the base work in your price comes from.

Does a big driveway project in South Gate need extra city review?

Usually only if it's large, because South Gate's plan review for this is typically for residential projects that disturb more than 5,000 square feet of soil. Most home driveways are smaller than that, so it mainly matters if you're paving a big lot or doing the driveway as part of bigger work, and that's a question for the city before we start. I'll bring it up at the estimate if your job is that size.

Why South Gate homeowners call Advanced South Gate Concrete for driveways

  • I write your estimate myself

The person who looks at your ground and writes the price is me, and our own crew does the prep, forming, pouring and finishing with me usually on site. That means the slope and base we talked about are the ones that get built.

  • Started with neighbors in South Gate

I started out pouring walks and patching driveways for neighbors here on weekends, and fixing a lot of other people's mistakes taught me where driveways fail. We've been in business since 2013, and most of our calls still come from South Gate and the cities around it.

  • Fully licensed and insured

California's contractor licensing board has a concrete class, C-8, that covers pavement and flat concrete work, and you can look up any contractor there before you hire. The board also requires every active C-8 contractor to carry workers' comp, so ask whoever you're considering to show it.

The parts that decide whether a driveway lasts get buried on pour day, so that's what I'll want to talk about when I come out. Set up a visit or call (213) 643-0035.

  • Concrete patio construction

Want a flat spot out back for a table and grill? A new patio gets the same packed base and slope away from the house as your driveway.

  • Stamped concrete services

If plain gray isn't the look you want, stamping gives the slab a stone, brick or tile pattern, poured over a base built the same way.
